Weekend closest to St. Urho Day - March 16

St. Urho Days

Each March, the community of Menahga gathers to celebrate the legendary Finnish hero during St. Urho Days (St. Urho Day is one day BEFORE St. Patrick's Day.) The celebration honors the playful folklore of St. Urho, who is said to have chased the grasshoppers out of Finland to save the grape crop. The festivities kick off with a community medallion hunt and continue with traditions like the ceremonial changing of the guard, the official proclamation, and plenty of laughter and storytelling along the way.

The highlight of the day is the parade at high noon, when residents and visitors line the streets to watch the colorful procession celebrating Finnish heritage and small-town pride. Families, local groups, and businesses all take part, creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere for everyone. Along with the one block parade, the day includes a variety of community activities and lighthearted traditions that make St. Urho Days a favorite late-winter celebration in Menahga.

Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteers are the heart of community events in Menahga. If you’d like to help, you can volunteer through the Menahga Civic & Commerce Association by reaching out through our website, contacting a board member, or signing up when volunteer opportunities are announced. Whether it’s helping set up for an event, assisting during activities, or pitching in behind the scenes, every bit of help makes a difference.

So, why volunteer?

When neighbors work together, great things happen. Volunteering helps bring community traditions to life, supports local businesses, and creates events that families and visitors can enjoy together. It’s one of the many ways people help keep Menahga a welcoming place to live, work, and play.

Event Coordinator

The St. Urho Days event is chaired by Janis Hillstrom. Send a message through our contact page to find out more about volunteering for this event. We appreciate your support!
